Hyperbolic Geometry Explorations Used
From Prep08Wiki
Last year I assigned these 4 explorations to my students:
- escherwiki:Escher's Circle Limit Exploration This exploration is designed to help the student gain an intuitive understanding of what hyperbolic geometry may look like. Escher's prints are nice examples that illustrate what we would see when looking down on a hyperbolic universe.
- escherwiki:Hyperbolic Geometry Exploration The Java Applet NonEuclid allows us to draw acurate pictures of objects in hyperbolic space.
- escherwiki:Hyperbolic Geometry II with NonEuclid Exploration Further questions we developed using NonEuclid.
- escherwiki:Ideal Hyperbolic Tessellations Exploration Looking at some hyperbolic tessellations that are (relatively) easy to draw.
These explorations were followed by the following homework assignment:
I started with an hour to introduce hyperbolic geometry. The explorations each took about a day. The homework we spent a day in in class to get the students going. So this section would have taken me at least 2 weeks (at 3 hours a week) to cover.
Suggested Activities:
- Look through the explorations and see what was assigned as activities.
- Take a close look at the homework. Problem 7 is a pretty neat problem comparing and contrasting all three geometries.
